PHILOSOPHY & ETHICS

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Philosophy and Ethics is an important and valued subject at The Whitby High School. It provides students with an opportunity to encounter challenging philosophical and ethical questions, explore religious and secular responses, and develop their own thoughts and ideas on these controversial issues.

KEY STAGE 3

In Year 7, students build a foundation for the study of Philosophy and Ethics by exploring some of the major world religions including Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Years 8 and 9, students then study broader questions in philosophy and ethics including, ‘Where did the universe come from?’, ‘Is it ever right to kill?’ and ‘Is there life after death?’

Students are primarily assessed via pieces of extended writing completed in class and an end of year test. Students are expected to explain the views of others in response to philosophical and ethical questions, and to argue their own point of view effectively with the support of evidence.

KEY STAGE 4

At Key Stage 4 studets undertake AQA GCSE Religious Studies (Specification A). The AQA website states that students who take the qualification, ‘will learn how religion, philosophy and ethics form the basis of our culture, and develop valuable skills that will help prepare them for further study.’ As part of the GCSE students study the contrast between Christianity and Buddhism (a religion that focuses on personal development and has no formal belief in God). Students will also study broader questions such as, ‘Does God exist?’, ‘Should we allow capital punishment?’ and ‘What makes a just war?’

Students are assessed by two written examinations lasting 1hr 45mins. In lessons, students are assessed by completing frequent exam questions under timed conditions.
