ADMISSION TO YEAR 7 SEPTEMBER 2020

Welcome to all students who have been offered a place at The Whitby High School for September 2020! We are delighted that you will be joining us. We will be getting in touch with you soon with further information and it is important that you return the requested documents as confirmation that you will be taking the place. If you do not wish to take up the allocated place please email AdmissionsCWAC@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk . As we are oversubscribed there is a waiting list and places that we know are not required can be allocated to other applicants.

As the duration of school closures is currently uncertain we are postponing all visits to school at this stage, including parents/carers’ meetings and student transition visits. Behind the scenes we are getting things ready for our newest school members and will soon be talking (virtually!) with current primary teachers so that we can best manage your children's transition to us.

Please make sure you have emailed school to confirm that you are accepting the place and let us know of any changes to addresses, emails or phone numbers. If we don't have all of this information you might miss important updates from us.

We will be in touch with updates in due course. For now we are considering how best to manage the transition programme this year but we will do our absolute utmost to ensure that all young people have plenty of opportunity to get used to the school and realise there's nothing to worry about!

We look forward to meeting you at a later date!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR HOUSE

Due to the school closures, our House Progress Managers have been unable to introduce themselves via the usual assembly during induction days. As an alternative, each HPM has recorded a brief message for the new cohort.

Simply click the House badge relevant to you to hear your message.

EMAIL FROM MRS HILL

Due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic we are unable to offer the traditional transition process we are accustomed to. We will however be providing all of the necessary information and updates required to make the start of your child’s Whitby journey as smooth as possible.

All correspondence from Deputy Headteacher Mrs Hill will be listed below. Please check back periodically to keep up to date.

YEAR 6 SUBJECT CHALLENGES - 6TH - 10TH JULY

As we near the end of the school year, your teachers at The Whitby High School have set you a number of exciting optional challenges to get you excited about joining us in September. See the list below for the challenges set by each subject that give you an idea of the things you will be working on in September.

Choose to do any many or as few as you like this week and send them to us. We’ll be recording all the challenges you attempt and at the end of the week we will count which House and attempted the most and they will be crowned Year 6 House Champions.

When you attempt each challenge, take and send us a picture of your work or brief details of your attempt to;

getinvolved@whitbyhs.cheshire.sch.uk

When we receive your email we will reply and record which challenge you have done.

Good Luck!

Instructions

Art - It's All Fun and Games

Art - Pin It On

Imagine it is the year 800AD.   The Lord of Ellesmere Portshire has received terrible news!   The Vikings have invaded the North, destroyed the town of York and they are marching West!!!   You have been given you the task of building a castle to defend the land.   Money is no object and you have hundreds of workers, but time is short and so are materials.   Using what is available at the time, you must design a castle and its defences.   Label the castle clearly so that the Lord understands exactly what you have planned.

Cross Curricular - Look and you Will Find

Create a themed scavenger hunt. Choose your favourite sport, movie, book, or subject in school and use that as inspiration to create a scavenger hunt with clever clues. Once you’ve created your scavenger hunt, invite someone in your family to try and figure out your clever clues!

Drama/English - The Perfect Playlist

Compile a playlist for your current mood. Your playlist must have a minimum of 10 songs. Give your playlist a name, describe the overall vibe of your playlist and explain why you selected these specific songs.

DT Food - Chopped Home Edition

Choose a recipe from a cookbook or create your own original recipe. Document the process of making your dish with drawings and notes on paper. Include details about ingredients, measurements, and the steps involved in making this dish.

DT/Science - Build It and They Will Come

Design your own Rube Goldberg machine that performs a simple task in an overly-complicated way. If you need to see an example or just need some inspiration, watch this!

English -  That's Comical

Research an event of your choice in a chapter of a book or using the internet and draw a comic strip to show what happened in that event.

Bring the text to life with images and captions.

History - Build It and Keep Them Out

Lord of Ellesmere Portshire has received terrible news!

Music - Jingle All the Way

Think about an item or product in your home that has been unexpectedly useful while you have been stuck at home. Write a jingle that could be used in a commercial to advertise the benefits of this random item or product.

*Bonus: If you play an instrument, compose a musical score!

PE/Dance - Let the Dancing Begin

Imagine you are entering the 2020 Tik Toc Dance Challenge. Select a song and design dance moves to go with that song. Practice your moves and teach a parent or sibling your dance.

ICT - Let the Dancing Continue

Get your dancing shoes on and let’s see if you are a budding computer programmer in the making. Visit this link  https://hourofcode.com/dance2019
and follow the instructions. Can you get the animals to dance along to some of your favourite songs?   This can be done on a computer, smartphone or tablet. If you get to the end, take a picture of the virtual certificate to prove how good a programmer you are!

Science - Weird Science

Design your own at-home science experiment using everyday household items. Begin with a question you want to answer. Write up a materials list and a step-by-step description of the procedure. Check-in with a parent or carer for feedback on your proposed plan. Conduct your experiment and document what happens!
